ROSEMEAD, Calif. – Has Clay Guida fought better competition than Ben Henderson?
The question, according to Guida, is how could he not? He’s literally fought almost all of the lightweight division, save for two-time title challenger Gray Maynard and, of course, champ Frankie Edgar.
That’s why Guida is pretty confident he’s got the best argument for a title shot if he beats Ben Henderson on Saturday at UFC on FOX.

UFC and FOX officials believe Saturday’s one-fight TV card, UFC on FOX, is the best introduction to an audience that may not be familiar with MMA.
Of course, those familiar with the sport and the UFC’s product are conditioned to watch major events with a four- or five-fight main card on PPV and a two-fight Spike TV card bolstered by preliminary-card bouts on Facebook.
Among the big changes on the horizon when the UFC’s partnership with FOX formally begins in January 2012 is a 90-minute timeslot for major events broadcast on the network.

Since winning his title two-and-a-half years ago, Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard has defended his belt just once.
The same goes for lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.
But that could soon change. As Bellator CEO and chairman Bjorn Rebeny told MMAjunkie.com, the addition of more tournaments, the elimination of non-title fights, and continued between-seasons events all could result in the champs defending their titles more often.

LAS VEGAS – Japanese submission ace Hatsu Hioki
admits his UFC 137 win over fellow featherweight George Roop wasn’t the
most convincing victory in MMA history.
There were octagon jitters during his first UFC win. There were tactical
mistakes during the 15-minute contest. And perhaps most importantly,
Roop was was just one tough S.O.B.
But the important thing for Hioki is that he did walk away with the
victory. And since he’s currently the de facto flag-bearer for Japanese
MMA, Hioki believes his performance proves his countrymen can also be
successful in the octagon.

Oh, how “Danny Boy” is betrayed by his face.
At Roufusport Academy in Milwaukee, Danny Downes is
heatedly sparring in the cage. Anthony Pettis’ best friend has dropped
in and watches the proceedings. The friend leans over to Pettis and gym
patriarch Duke Roufus and says, “Hey man, that kid is pretty good. When
he grows up, he’ll be awesome.”
Downes is 25 years old, and a day out from fighting Ramsey Nijem on the preliminary card of UFC 137.

As to the long-term prospects of the two men involved in the main event
of “Strikeforce: Meldendez vs. Masvidal,” it’s not the challenger people
are looking at.
The promotion’s lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, is expected to do big things in the UFC. Just a week ago, he was
all but considered the newest signee of the UFC and the next challenger
to that promotion’s lightweight champ, Frankie Edgar.
That’s not the case, of course. During a press conference Thursday in
San Diego, Melendez said it was “back to reality,” meaning he still has
to fight Jorge Masvidal on Dec. 17.
