Frank Mir

Frank Mir is slated to face fellow former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in a No. 1 contender’s bout on May 26 at UFC 146 in Las Vegas, but in light of current challenger Alistair Overeem’s positive drug test result for elevated levels of testosterone, Mir may get a shot a little sooner than expected. Mir had hoped to defeat Velasquez and then six or eight months down the road get a shot at the winner between current champion Junior dos Santos and Overeem, who were to fight on the same card.

Frank Mir

Frank Mir Frank Mir seems to always be just one win away from a title shot. The constant contender has fought in four UFC championship bouts, and if he gets past Cain Velasquez at UFC 146, he’ll be fighting for a UFC championship belt for a fifth time. He’s seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows during his career to this point. He rose to the top of the heavyweight division at a young age. He debuted in the organization at just 22 years old.

TORONTO – Frank Mir was all but done, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira appeared he’d even the score in their long-awaited rematch.

Instead, after being rocked early and seemingly a blow or two away from being battered into unconsciousness on the mat, Mir escaped, slapped on a kimura and then rolled with his the fellow jiu-jitsu ace before breaking Nogueira’s arm to force the stoppage.

The fight took place at UFC 140 at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. It co-headlined the night’s pay-per-view main card.

TORONTO – Frank Mir may downplay the significance of Saturday’s rematch with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140, but it’s clear he has plenty of motivation.

Mir knocked out Nogueira three years ago at UFC 92 to win an interim title.

The victory, though, has been tarnished over time, and Mir told MMAjunkie.com it’s due to an all-too-familiar reason with the Brazilian fighting legend.

Heading into his UFC 140 rematch with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Frank Mir has been blogging for <a href=http://www.sportsnet.ca/mma/2011/11/30/ultimate_blogger_mir_1/>Sportsnet.ca</a> and discussed their first fight three years ago in this week's entry.<Br><Br>

Following his second round stoppage of Nogueira at UFC 92 in December of 2008, rumors spread that Nogueira was not in top fight form due to a staph infection.<Br><Br>

Mir gives his take on that:<Br><Br>

I’m less than two weeks away from a rematch with MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo (Minotauro) Nogueira. I fight him in the co-main event of UFC 140 in Toronto on Dec. 10. I’ve been asked if I want to "prove" whether my second-round TKO of Big Nog was legitimate or not, but, quite honestly, there’s nothing to prove there.<Br><Br>

I won the last fight, which took place three years ago in Las Vegas, because I was the better fighter on the night. After the fight there were all sorts of excuses that Nog was hurt, that he had a staph infection but I personally don't think his staph infection played much part in the fight itself, or the result at the end of it all.<Br><Br>

I think I would have beaten him in the exact same manner, TKO in a couple of rounds, staph infection or not. Maybe without the problem he could have increased his pace and tempo a little bit more, but, in hindsight, we really didn't fight that type of fight anyway. He fought a very calm and calculated type of fight and he looked to pick me apart with single shots from range.<Br><Br>

If we'd started having a hard grappling match and Nogueira backed off or refused to engage then, yes, it could have attributed the win to him not being 100 per cent on the night. I could have looked at that scenario and said, "Yeah, Nogueira wasn't really Nogueira tonight."<Br><Br>

As it turned out, though, that didn't happen at all and I don’t feel there’s any reason I need to "prove" anything regarding that result.<Br><Br>

Me punching him in the chin repeatedly had nothing to do with a staph infection, believe me. I could be sick as hell going into a fight, but I still remember and can perform the necessary techniques to get me out of trouble. The problem is, you can't keep repeating those techniques over a length of time, as you have nothing much in the tank. Nogueira lost that fight because my striking technique was better than his and that could be the reason he loses this rematch, too.<Br><Br>
