CHICAGO – Give Chael Sonnen a mic – as reporters recently did at UFC on FOX 2 open workouts – and you get a dizzying and boastful monologue from one of MMA’s biggest talkers.
There are outrageous claims, numerous insults and excessive self-congratulatory proclamations.
Listen long enough, though, and you get some honest and sincere thoughts – though even they sometimes are accompanied by shtick.

Bellator Fighting Championships middleweight title holder Hector Lombard boasts one of the most impressive winning streaks
in all of mixed martial arts, but he’s not exactly a household name.
Chael Sonnen fell short in his bid to unseat UFC middleweight champion
Anderson Silva, yet he’s one of the most sought-after fighters in all of
the sport. That doesn’t sit well with Lombard.
“Chael Sonnen talks [expletive] about everything and the guy is boring
as [expletive],” Lombard said.

HOUSTON – Consider Chael Sonnen’s silence broken.
After a pre-UFC 136 buildup largely void of any of Sonnen’s famed
trashtalking and epic rants, the top middleweight contender wasted
little time in further alienating any Brazilian fans he may have had by
proclaiming himself the UFC’s true middleweight champion and offering
Anderson Silva a second crack at the title.
Oh yeah, and he called Vitor Belfort a fool and ordered “The Phenom” to carry his luggage to the airport.

For most fighters, the path from the cage to the dressing room to the press conference to the hotel to the airport, and finally, the deafening quiet of home is like a space shuttle in reentry – one-thousand miles per hour to 25 in a school zone.
Then it’s back to the day job of the gym, the occasional interview, the signings, the seminar. The next fight comes around, and blastoff.
After 14 months away from fighting, it’s been a bumpy ride back for Chael Sonnen. The world he’s created and the world in which he finds himself day to day, well, they disagree.

HOUSTON – In many ways, Chael Sonnen makes it too easy for reporters.
Ask a few questions, and you have a headline-worthy sound bite, a boastful prediction, a claim that flies in the face of conventional wisdom, and then a stealthy compliment that makes you think the outspoken fighter really isn’t all that bad.
For Sonnen, it’s just another day on the job as MMA’s most unique personality.
